Security

Regarding safety in the country amidst the current demonstrations in Georgia:

The ongoing protests are confined to Tbilisi, with only very isolated incidents occurring in Batumi and Kutaisi.

The protests generally begin at 7:00 p.m., at which point road closures may occasionally occur. However, these affect only the areas near government buildings—such as the Parliament building in Tbilisi—and do not disrupt general traffic flow.

The protests have been peaceful overall; while there have been occasional instances of unrest involving security forces, this is not the norm. As long as one stays away from the protests, they pose no danger.

In our assessment, visiting and traveling within Georgia is possible without restriction.

Booking

 
Bookings are made exclusively via our website. You will receive an email with the invoice and our bank details. The amount must be transferred within ten days. Upon receipt of payment, your booking is automatically confirmed.

 

What payment methods are available?

 
As a payment method, we only offer payment by invoice.
Paypal or Visa payments are currently not possible.

 

Cancellation policy

 

Up to 60 days before the start of the tour, cancellation is free of charge,
From 60 to 30 days before the start of the tour, 20% of the booking costs will apply, from 30 to three days before the start of the tour 50%.
If you cancel within 72 hours before the start of the tour, we reserve the right to retain the full amount.

 

Is the vehicle insured?

 

All of our vehicles have comprehensive insurance (Vollkasko) in Georgia.

Please note that the insurance only covers damages that have been recorded by the police directly at the scene of the accident. Defects recorded at a later date cannot be claimed.

 

How much is the security deposit?

 
The security deposit for the motorhomes is €1,000 and must be deposited in cash upon handover.
If there are no defects, the security deposit will be refunded to you at the end of the tour.

 

What can lead to deductions from the security deposit?

 
  • If there is damage to the vehicle caused by the renter when the motorhome is returned, the resulting costs will be offset against this security deposit. If the camper is damaged to such an extent that repairs are necessary, we reserve the right to withhold the deposit until the final cost of the repairs is determined.
  • If you are caught flashing by a traffic camera (e.g., for speeding), we will receive a payment request via SMS. We will settle this fine immediately and deduct it from the security deposit.
  • Further deductions may apply if the motorhome is returned later than the agreed time. We try to organize the handover times as individually as possible.
  • As a rule, the rental motorhome is handed over with a full tank of fuel. The vehicle should be returned with the same fuel level. Otherwise, a corresponding amount will be deducted from the security deposit. This also applies to any cleaning costs, if these are not included in the scope of the booking.

 

Driving Licence & Restrictions

 

Driver's License & Additional Driver

 
The driver must be at least 25 years old and have held a driver's license for at least three years. A German (international) driver's license is sufficient. An additional driver can be registered, but they must meet the same requirements.

 

Off-road Routes

 

Please note that road conditions in Georgia are not comparable to Europe everywhere. Especially in remote regions, there are off-road and gravel roads with potholes, which would require four-wheel drive vehicles with a high chassis. According to Section 3.2.5 of our Terms and Conditions (AGB), driving our rental vehicles on off-road roads is not permitted.

This applies, among others, to the following routes:

  • Tusheti - from Alvani via the Abano Pass to Omalo
  • Khevsureti - to Shatili via the Datvisjvari (Bear's Cross) Pass
  • Upper Svaneti - from Mestia to Ushguli
  • Mountainous Adjara: from Khulo via the Goderdzi Pass
  • via the Zekari Pass to Abastumani
  • Vashlovani National Park

 

IMPORTANT: If damage to the vehicle occurs on unsuitable roads (off-road, unpaved mountain pass roads), it is not covered by any insurance, and the renter must pay for the damage themselves. Towing services are also not covered by insurance in these cases and are often not possible due to the difficult road conditions.

We would like to explicitly point out that you should inform yourself sufficiently in advance regarding the passability of the roads for the motorhome. We are happy to assist you with this.

 

Can I bring my pet?

 
Bringing any kind of animal in our vehicles is prohibited.

 

Travel to other countries

 
Driving outside of Georgia is not permitted.
 
Driving across the border to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, or Turkey would theoretically be possible. However, as this involves a high administrative effort for us and the insurance coverage is not uniform in neighboring countries, we generally do not offer this option.
 
Driving into the autonomous regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is also not permitted.

Power Supply

 

The interior of the motorhome is equipped with 220 V power outlets. However, these only function when the motorhome is connected to shore power, for example at a campsite. An external socket is provided on each motorhome for this purpose.

In addition to the vehicle battery, there is also an on-board battery which powers the lighting, refrigerator, and water pump, among other things.

Vehicle handover

 

Handover Location of the Motorhome

 

The standard handover of the motorhome takes place in Tbilisi city center.

For an additional fee, the handover can also take place at other locations.

Handover Time of the Motorhome

 

The standard handover takes place during our office hours, between 08:00 AM and 05:00 PM.

For an additional fee of €30.00, the handover can also take place outside of our office hours and at night.

Mileage Allowance

  There is no mileage limit. Unlimited mileage is included.

On the way

 

Campsites

 

Campsites as they are known in Europe do not exist in Georgia. Scattered across the country, there are a few private individuals who provide a type of campsite. Water, electricity, toilets, and showers are often offered.

Some campsites also offer facilities for emptying toilets and greywater. However, this must always be discussed with the campsite owners. In general, it is recommended to contact the campsites in advance.

Wild Camping

 

Wild camping is permitted in Georgia. However, care should be taken to leave the site tidy and not to affect the living space of the residents. In the above-mentioned app, popular wild camping spots are registered and commented on by other campers.

 

Off-road Routes

Drinking Water

 

We recommend initially drinking only boiled water until your stomach has acclimated. Drinking water canisters of various sizes are available for purchase in supermarkets.

Otherwise, there are fountains with fresh mountain water along the roadsides that can be drunk without hesitation. It is also possible to fill the motorhome with water at the campsites.

 

Refilling Water in the Motorhome

 

Fresh water can be refilled at all designated "campsites". Otherwise, there is a fountain or a tapped spring in every village that can be used. Clean spring water is also fine. Do not use river water under any circumstances, as it is too dirty.

When filling the water tank, ensure that hoses and connections are clean. Flush the hose with fresh water first until fresh water flows through. Avoid hanging the hose directly into the tank if possible.

 

In road traffic

 

Rules of Conduct

 
  1. On a priority road, you always have the right of way, even when entering a roundabout, unless a different traffic regulation is explicitly indicated by road signs.
  2. Honking is an important part of road traffic in Georgia and is mostly used to draw attention to a specific situation. It is most commonly used when the driver behind you wishes to overtake or as a greeting.
  3. Motorcycle and scooter riders like to overtake from both the right and left. Checking your rearview mirrors at traffic lights, during lane changes, or when overtaking can help prevent accidents.
  4. In cities, driving on designated bus lanes is prohibited. This is subject to a fine.
  5. You will frequently encounter stray animals or entire herds of animals on the roads. In these situations, it is recommended to drive past them at walking pace or, in the case of large herds, to stop and wait until they have passed you.

 

Traffic Fines

 

 

A traffic fine can only be paid at designated terminal machines (Payboxes) or via bank transfer. If there is an outstanding fine upon departure from Georgia, it may result in you being unable to leave the country.

If you are caught flashing by a traffic camera (e.g., for speeding), we will receive a payment request via SMS. We will settle this fine immediately and deduct it from the security deposit.

 

Parking

 

In large cities such as Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi, there are designated parking zones where parking fees apply. The "Parking Tbilisi" app is available for paying parking fees in Tbilisi. Alternatively, parking fees can also be paid at Payboxes.

In cities, there are also larger parking lots where the parking fee can be paid on-site. We recommend these parking lots as they are easier to access and navigate with the motorhomes.

In smaller towns, parking is usually free almost everywhere, unless it is designated as a paid parking or no-parking zone. At busy locations, typically near a market, there are parking attendants. These individuals help with parking in and out and receive between 50 Tetri and 1 Lari in return.

 

Stray Animals

 

There are many free-roaming stray dogs and stray cats in Georgia. Generally, they are friendly towards humans and happy to receive attention.

You should always be very careful and keep your distance around shepherd dogs, especially in rural regions, as they protect their herd and cannot always be called back by the shepherd.

 

Culture & Behavior

 

Being a Guest in Georgia

 

People in Georgia practice great hospitality, and it is not uncommon to receive an invitation. You are very welcome to accept it, as the people are genuinely happy about it.

If you have the opportunity, you are welcome to bring a small gift to an invitation. Small items from your own home country are always a pleasure.

In Georgia, it is customary to be asked personal questions. Therefore, it is not uncommon to be asked about income, prices, costs, or children.

Georgians are proud of their homemade products. Thus, it is not uncommon to be offered homemade wine or chacha. It is polite to take at least a small sip of it, or at least smell it. Before drinking, there is usually a traditional toast, after which the glass is emptied. But beware, Georgia has a strict 0.0 blood alcohol limit for driving. Explaining to your hosts that you still have to drive is an accepted reason not to drink alcohol.

If you are invited to a Supra, a feast with plenty of food and wine, special rules apply to wine drinking. The Tamada (toastmaster) proposes a toast, and only then is the glass of wine emptied. Women are allowed an exception here; they do not have to drink to every toast, and it is sufficient if they only drink a portion from their glass.

 

Tipping

 

Tipping is a matter of course in tourist areas. With families, however, one should be more sensitive so as not to offend their hospitality. Nevertheless, everyone is pleased, even in remote regions, if you round up the bill or leave at least a small tip.

 

Conduct in Georgian Churches

 

We ask you to respect the religious customs of the country. Even if you only wish to visit a church, it is required to cover your knees and shoulders. In addition, women wear a head covering (a thin scarf is sufficient). Men, on the other hand, should remove their head covering when entering a church.

 

General information about Georgia

 

Entry Requirements

 

According to information from the Federal Foreign Office, entry into Georgia is possible with the following documents: passport, temporary passport, national identity card, and child passport. Travel documents must be valid at least until the date of departure at the time of entry.

      No visa is required for stays of up to 360 days.

Proof of valid health and accident insurance in Georgia must be provided upon entry.

 

Currency & Payment

 

The local currency is the Lari (GEL). Card payments are accepted in most stores and at gas stations. Cash is usually required at markets and in very small shops.

Cash can easily be withdrawn at banks. It is also possible to exchange Euros for GEL at banks or exchange offices.

 

Shopping

 
There are a number of large supermarket chains that offer a wide variety of products, usually imported from Europe as well. Small local shops tend to have a limited selection but still provide all the bare necessities.
 
It is well worth buying fresh vegetables, fruit, and dairy products in specialized vegetable shops or at local markets (called Bazari).

 

Refueling

 

Our motorhomes are refueled exclusively with high-quality diesel, as this fuel is gentle on the transmission and allows for a longer driving range per tank. We recommend refueling at major gas station chains: Wissol, Socar, Gulf, Rompetrol, and LUK.

In Georgia, it is customary for a gas station attendant to refuel your car.

 

Climate and Weather

 

Seven different climate zones prevail in Georgia, which should be taken into account when traveling around the country. These can be divided into the following areas:

  1. In the west of Georgia, in Imereti and Samegrelo, a Mediterranean climate prevails with many dense deciduous and mixed forests.
  2. In the east and south, in the Kartli and Kakheti regions, on the other hand, there is a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters.
  3. The southeast, in Gareja and Vashlovani, consists of a steppe landscape / semi-desert.
  4. In the Colchian lowlands along the Black Sea in the Guria region, there is a subtropical climate with heavy rainfall and high humidity.
  5. In the Greater Caucasus, in the Khevsureti and Tusheti regions, an alpine climate prevails.
  6. In the Svaneti region in the Greater Caucasus, on the other hand, there is a high-alpine climate.
  7. Three glaciers particularly influence the climate: Kazbek, Dzhangi-Tau, and Shkhara.

In addition, rapid weather changes occur frequently, especially in the mountain regions. This should be taken into consideration when looking for campsites and choosing routes. Meadows that are still dry can turn into large mud puddles within minutes. Small streams can become torrents in a matter of minutes, and the banks can overflow or even collapse in parts. Therefore, you should not park too close to bodies of water. Furthermore, when it rains in the mountains, it can cause changes in the water levels down in the valley.

 

Packing list

 

What else should be on the packing list?

 

Of course, everyone knows best what they need for themselves. However, we recommend choosing a travel duffel bag or a travel backpack instead of a bulky suitcase, as these are much easier to stow away in the motorhome.

It is also advisable to bring long-sleeved, lightweight clothing for protection against the sun and mosquitoes. We additionally recommend hiking boots and clothing for rainy days. If you like to keep your feet warm, you should pack slippers for inside the motorhome. In the mountains, it gets cold at night, while the sun can be very warm during the day.
